Thanet Wanderers avenged their defeat at Barnet Wood Road in the RFU Senior Vase three weeks ago with a bonus point win which keeps them in second place in the league. However, early on it looked as though Bromley might come away with the spoils as they raced into a 12-0 lead in the first quarter with tries from Mike Haisell and Freddie Bender, the first of which was converted by Steve Pillow. Bromley were denied a third try only by a desperate try saving tackle from left wing Charlie Knight. Whilst the home were dominating things up front, the Bromley defence held firm until the dying moments of the first half, when No 8 Andy Letts crashed over for a try. Centre Nick Herbert added the extras to make the halftime score 7-12.
A catch and drive from a lineout early on in the second half saw Thanet level the score, captain Brett Scott getting the touchdown. Bromley came back strongly and a cheeky try from George Scott was converted by Steve Pillow to make it 12-19. Nick Herbert closed the gap with a penalty and with Thanet now getting into their stride, they enjoyed a period of territory and possession that culminated in a second try for Andy Letts. Nick Herbert’s conversion put Thanet in front for the first time at 22-19. The next score was going to be crucial and unfortunately for Bromley, it went Thanet’s way. Some slick handling gave winger Charlie Knight some space to work in and he beat the cover to score under the posts. Nick Herbert’s conversion made it 29-19. That left Bromley the game in the last fifteen minutes but a resilient Thanet defence kept them at bay and denied them even a losing bonus point.
Next week, Bromley play Park House at home, kick off is at 2pm.
